Romanian born, he studies at the Art Academy in Bucharest and exiles in Paris in 1930 to become one the closest friends of painters Yves Tanguy, Victor Brauner, Marcel Duchamp, Oscar Dominguez or poets Benjamin Fondane, Ilarie Voronca, Robert Rius, Julien Gracq, Michel Butor… He stays in France during the occupation and works at the cooperative store “le Croque-Fruits” in Marseilles before joining the surrealistic and resistant publication La Main à plume in Paris. When France is liberated, he takes part in the collective fresco of Saint Anne and starts becoming famous with his first personal exhibition organized by André Breton at the Cahiers d’art gallery. He also stands out during the international exhibition at the Maeght Gallery.
